If you do love reading, let’s get back to it…
The first thing, massive action is the biggest key to perseverance.
Here are the two extreme examples of perseverance, in action. I can always tell an employee who is going to have perseverance.
When I train somebody and I ask them to do something, I say, “Can you please post these jobs on our website?” Of course, they don’t know how to do this yet.
They come back to me and they say, “Okay, I tried, I tried to do this. I logged in. I got to a certain point, but it isn’t working.” I can tell at that point they only really tried one thing.
They logged in, and then they tried something, they got an error, something happened, and they very quickly gave up and said, “I don’t know what to do. What do I do now?”
The way that I go back to them is I say, “Okay, what are three other things that you could do?”
It’s not working is not an option for me. I don’t know what’s not working. But I would say, have you asked a web developer?
Have you called WordPress customer service?
Have you tried again in a few minutes?
Have you tried in a different browser? Have you restarted your computer?
Have you double-checked all your credentials?
I don’t know what the problem is, but there are a thousand things that have not been tried yet.
And it’s not working is not an option. And that’s the key to perseverance.
If I just gave them all the answers, they would miss the lesson, plus I would also be training them to keep coming back to me and getting answers from me when really they need to learn to find the answers themselves.
They need to ask themselves the right questions. And that’s where perseverance is. It’s yes, maybe at first it’s frustrating because they don’t understand.
Something doesn’t work the first time or the second time.
But I guarantee there are a thousand other things that haven’t been tried and it’s their job to learn to figure those things out until they get to the result.
The second one, say you want to make $100,000 a year salary.
That’s a big lofty goal, but the same principles apply for this as they do for the admin assistant trying to post a job on the site, so be onto yourself.
Your brain’s going to say this is too hard.
This is not working. Let’s go ask somebody. But that’s a trick in business. Maybe making 100,000 turns out to be harder than you thought. Maybe getting to $100,000 salary is harder than you thought.
Saying, well, that’s not working translates into I haven’t gotten my results yet, so I think I need to start either changing my path or doing something else.
No, that’s when you really need to double down on your perseverance. That’s when you really need to keep going because the problem is you end up with a whole bunch of half dug holes and no hole dug all the way to your goal.
And this is what happens to a lot of people. Say if your goal is to make $100,000 in a year and you try something and it doesn’t work, that’s a big goal.
You’re probably going to have to try a lot of things and you’re going to have to be aware of the fact that it is going to be challenging and that your brain is going to want to pull you away from it.
It’s going to want you to give up. It’s going to want to distract you, but it’s all because it’s getting hard, and digging that hole is getting harder and you’re getting more tired.
But it doesn’t mean you’re not going to be able to do it.
It just means you haven’t been doing it long enough yet. You haven’t been trying it long enough yet.
The second key to perseverance, staying in inspiration, staying inspired.
You can do this by reading posts like this. You can do it by getting a coach a one-on-one coach who can help you.
And more importantly, you can get it by investing in yourself. Whether that be time or whether that be money, you need to invest in yourself in order for you to have skin in the game to keep you honest.
What a coach does or what a program does or what… if you sign up for something that’s going to keep you committed, then you have skin in the game and you want to keep yourself honest and on track because you put money out there now.
You put money on the line. You are going to make sure that you follow through with that now.
Whereas if you don’t, you’re just giving up on yourself and that sucks, but it’s not as hard as say losing money because you didn’t follow through.
You want to sign up for something. You want to invest in yourself. You want to take a big step, especially with these big goals.
