Going On 1 Interview Per Month Is Not Enough

In this post, I will talk about a big mistake that most people that come to me are making and how to fix it. Hint.. ok I’ll just tell you. The mistake is NOT GOING ON ENOUGH INTERVIEWS!

Stay tuned!

If you do love reading, let’s get back to it…

So, the mistake a lot of my clients were making when I first started coaching them was that they are not going on nearly enough interviews to even get close to landing their dream job.

Of course, we’re all hoping for the best possible outcome (the job offer) and we would hope to get that on the first or second interview that we go on, but it doesn’t always happen like that.

In fact, it’s not the norm.

And if you’re someone who’s going on 4 interviews every 6 months, or 1 interview/month even…

I’m telling you right now, that it’s not enough, It’s not even close!

That’s like me saying “I talked to 4 people ever about my business, or I posted 4 youtube videos and no one liked them. I’m not a raving success yet so what’s wrong with me?”.

This isn’t working and I’m frustrated I guess I can’t do this I might as well give up.

People are going on 4 interviews and giving up.

But the truth of the matter is that it is VERY rare for someone to go on ONE interview and get offered the job right away at fantastic pay, start on Monday and live happily ever after!

The reality is that it can take many interviews and many second interviews, many conversations, and team interviews, and third interviews and a few talks about salary to get a job offer you’re freaking proud of and want to go out and celebrate over drinks with your friends.

Hiring Managers are taking a big risk when they hire someone.

They really want to make sure they’re making the right decision and they need to gather a lot of information to make their choice, they are investing time, resources and pulling company budgets together to get the right person in that position, hiring is NOT cheap, and it’s not easy.

It is a big risk for the person making the decision.

Staff Salaries are one of the organization’s highest expenses.

For example, right now we are hiring for a ProductManager and the process is arduous.

Many interviews, the candidates need to speak with many team members and department managers, in person, and over Skype, coordinating lots of different people’s schedules, and then there will be negotiations and approvals and paperwork that has to happen.

Going on a couple of interviews every few months and hanging all your hopes on that one interview at a time is going to mean that your process takes years and in the meantime…

You will get discouraged and go through the same emotional roller coaster each time something doesn’t work out.

The worst thing about this is that it focuses your energy into a place that doesn’t serve you, and puts you in a negative headspace every time.

You are left waiting and waiting some more, following up and wondering.

When instead what you should be doing is GOING ON MORE INTERVIEWS!

Continuing to operate in this way is like choosing to move at a tortoise-like pace, with lots of unnecessary stops along the way.

Stops that keep you down and out for a while… because your confidence gets slowly eroded like water splashing over a rock repeatedly.

Quitting (even temporarily quitting) can seem like a relief.

I had a client say to me: “I just can’t go on ANOTHER interview! 😫”

But she also knew that while she didn’t want to keep doing it, quitting was also not an option.

So even though you know you have to start back up again and apply for more jobs and go on more interviews, you’ve just had enough of being passed over and pushed around.

If that’s you then keep reading…
